How Best to Begin Buying Antiques in Auction or from Dealers

Março 6th, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By John Cohen About Becoming An Antique Collector Before buying anything; make a point of studying books and catalogues (even old ones) on your subject, then attend a few auctions, be sure to inspect your choice of antiques on the viewing days before the auction, always allow enough time to visit and explore the main dealers’ stock, both before and after any auction sales. This way you will gradually be able to assess what quality items are available and the prices being currently asked. Make a point of chatting to dealers, or well-known collectors, about what has happened after an auction. Not always, but sometimes one can gain quite a lot of useful guidance about particular pieces, what to look out for and importantly about the general feelings about any record breaking prices. After an auction it can be possible sometimes to find that a dealer might have a similar quality piece, or even a better one, for much less than has just been paid! A note of caution here, sometimes a really silly price is paid in the auction room, simply because two determined people badly wanted that piece. In such a case of course, that value has to be discounted to a certain extent. It is this sort of information that should be sought (in my earlier suggestion of chatting at the end of the auction). Buying Guidance The best advice for anyone tempted to collect any antiques would be, first, to study your choice of subject and attend auctions, meet and talk to the dealers, handle and see as many pieces as possible. Do not rush in to buy because unfortunately trying to collect, in any specialised antique area, it often takes many years to acquire the necessary expertise, without which, very costly mistakes can be made. Once you feel more confident you should then be prepared to commission a well-known specialist dealer to bid for you. You would have to expect to pay at least 10% (of the bid price) for this service. But this can be well worth paying, as you will not only benefit from his knowledge and guidance, you will also stop him bidding against you! Only another collector can fully appreciate that overpowering urge, that comes over one, on finding a treasure really wanted. It is the closest feeling to that of love at first sight. I have been told that ones pupils tend to enlarge, and this is one of the signs that dealers watch out for, and as collectors, of course, we always try desperately to camouflage our interest. Auctions Strange things certainly do happen at auction! If there is only one spectacular piece amongst some fairly good items, there is a good chance of picking up a bargain, both just before and just after, the really super piece. Before, the main buyers are often holding back hoping they can be in with a chance with their maximum bid, so they tend to stop bidding as high as they might have done in normal circumstances. Immediately after, because everyone is discussing what has just been paid, especially if a record price was reached, all this can be going on whilst another piece slips through and is sold. There are also items known as ’sleepers’ and often these are pieces that are sold at bargain prices, just because no one present required it, or for some reason it was overlooked. Attending a poor auction (this is one with only one or two good items in it, amongst a lot of junk) can be advantageous, if there is a fine example to be had. Quite a number of buyers feel they cannot afford the time in attending such a poor auction. Sadly this does not happen so much now. Sometimes too, but not often, a piece is wrongly described. Then one can, if lucky, really find a bargain. Once we bought a jade snuff bottle that is so remarkably well hollowed and such a flawless piece of stone, that it was in fact sold wrongly catalogued as glass! We had to buy it from a well-known dealer (preferring to pay him a good profit, rather than keep bidding it up against him) in the end it wasnt cheap but it is one of the finest we have ever seen! We no longer believe much in trying to find bargains, as we have found that the most expensive, but finest examples, over time, are often by far the best buys! We have worried about having paid too much on several occasions. They were very rare, superb examples, but still we worried. Yet these are now the treasures that have proved to be the most wonderful bargains of all! Beyond Value Lastly, there is one important factor that has not been mentioned, as it is so impossible to measure! That is the value of the pleasure one enjoys from participating, as a collector, in such a fascinating hobby as collecting antiques is hard to describe. You also meet such interesting people from all over the world, for there is an immediate bond amongst fellow collectors, except when met at the beginning of an auction! Then there is the intrigue of the hunt and the excitement at every new addition that only another collector can fully appreciate. Life is so enriched, I do believe that such hobbies are vital, and so many people who have hardly any outside interests, beyond their world of work, have no idea of just how much fun they are missing! Why Should You Give Gift Baskets?

Março 5th, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Perhaps you may have heard about gift baskets but have neither received one nor sent one. What are they good for and just why would anyone want to send one or get one? What goes into the making of a gift basket? Gift baskets are given for all kinds of occasions. They are sent on holidays, birthdays, or as an apology. A gift basket may be a way of saying thank you to certain people in your life such as a great secretary or to a helpful mentor. Gift baskets are sent to mark special occasions such as the birth of a new baby or just because you want to send one. In the traditional sense, a gift basket is a basket that has been filled with small presents for the receiver. Whoever recieves it gets several gifts inside one which increases the delight. These can range from snacks and food products to mementos to other useful items such as teacups. The container, your budget and your imagination are the only limits to what can be included in gift baskets. These days they can come in all kinds of containers including the traditional wicker basket. You may find baskets that are made from grapevines or rope. The container could be a child’s bucket with shovel, a mini rocking chair, a mug, or a dish drainer filled with goodies to celebrate a new home. Look around and imagine just what can become your container. Let your imagination free. As long as it can contain items, you can use it as a container or the base of the gift basket. And the items included within the gift baskets are limited as well, as we have said before, only by your imagination, budget and to some extent that the item will fit within the container. Usually these items will include foods such as jellies, snacks, teas, crackers, or even wine, maybe even with wineglasses. Candy, cookies and cheeses are also found in many gift baskets. Beyond food, you may find a loofah, soaps, candles, baby items, flowers or books. What could be better than to receive a romantic one with scented candles, bath salts, and a lovely book of poems? Lastly, most gift baskets will include some type of embellishment that will make it seem all the more special such as a sprig of silk flowers or fruit or a spray of tinsel. These brighten your gift and make it more attractive to the recepient of the gift. On the whole, gift baskets are a joy to give and to receive. The Second Half of My Life

Março 2nd, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Judy H. Wright Have you ever wondered where destiny would lead you? Have you ever pondered whether the road you are taking would lead to fulfillment and happiness? Unlike so many of my friends and family, I have always had the sure knowledge of what was expected of me. It was under a shade tree surrounded by my teddy bears and dolls that it came to me- I would have six children, write books that would help families, have the opportunity to speak and teach all over the world, and I would live to be 97 years old. That is pretty heavy stuff for a six year old. I shared this epiphany with my mother, and she never doubted the message. She continued to encourage and support me through every milestone until she died in my arms at age 93. Even while nurturing my family of six children and following my husband’s military career, I was gathering the skills to prepare me to “do my own thing.” When my children were grown and my parents were gone, I realized that the portion of my life devoted to care-giving and nurturing of my family was complete. I had 40 years of productive time left on this earth to accomplish all I had set forth to do. However, after carrying so much physical weight on my body for years, I was facing inevitable diabetes and arthritis. My future looked like pain, wheel chairs and doctor’s offices. Unless I took action, medical complications would curtail me from fulfilling my destiny. I approached this issue as I have the many books I have written. I investigated “one more diet” that I could live with for the rest of my life. I interviewed over 100 men and women across the country that had tried the same diets that didn’t work before finally finding a method that proved successful. My mind was made up. I chose gastric bypass surgery as a one-time solution. On July 30, 2002, I underwent a procedure called laparoscopic Roux-en-Y. This surgery creates a small stomach pouch which holds less than a cup of food. A section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch that absorbs less food than before. Most patients lose over half their excess weight in the first year and a half. Since my operation, I have lost 115 pounds. This is equivalent to the combined weight of my three granddaughters, Amanda, Lexi and Melissa! For the first time in years, I feel normal and in control when making food choices. Now I am able to enjoy life to the fullest and have the energy and stamina required helping other families raise their standard of living through my books and workshops. Finally, my spirit and body are in sync and I am ready to go forward. I am able to concentrate on my spirit’s promptings during yoga because I am no longer concerned with whether my body will be able to balance, bend or straighten up. For me, this option was a success. It gave me the ability to concentrate again on my writing, and to feel confident when I facilitate workshops or speak to groups. Yes, I have met my goal of being an international speaker and writer! To travel, teach, and fulfill my destiny I must be a woman of strength, and I must maintain that spirit and energy for the rest of my life. We each create our own reality by our thoughts, actions and belief systems. Hopefully that belief system will include guardian angels and a success team who will guide and assist us in our journey. I have an obligation to that little girl under the shade tree who understood her life’s purpose half a life time ago. The message that was shared with me and I now share with my children, my grandchildren, and the families that I work with is to listen carefully to the still small voice within that tells us we are important and have something of value to share with the world. The time to share your unique gift may not be now, but it will be someday and so always be in the process of becoming, learning and growing. Be open to possibilities that life and the angels have in store for you, and you will find the right road to fulfillment of your destiny. This article was written by Judy H. 7 Ways to Lose Weight Faster on the Body for Life Diet

Março 1st, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Ian Mason If you’re starting your 12 week Body for Life challenge you may already be pumped and ready to start dropping pounds (and inches). Try the 7 tips below to help maximize the results of your program. Use a weight loss supplement. I’m not talking a diet pill here, but rather a supplement designed to help curb your appetite during non-essential times. This will keep you from eating anytime outside of your six meals. I recommend Phentramin because of its proven track record. Do cardio in the morning. This sets the pace for your body’s metabolism for the rest of the day. This also has the added benefit of reducing your body’s fat stores from then night before, helping reduce any caloric surplus. Vary your workout. Avoid doing the same type of exercises for more than a month or so. Your body will adapt to the exercise pattern and the exercises themselves will become less effective. Varying your routine will cause your body to rebuild itself continually as it will not be able to predict which workout is coming next- this means more muscle gain and more fat loss. Clench your fist. When you are selecting portion sizes, clenching your first when choosing items that are high in energy is a good way to provide the nutrition you need while reducing your caloric intake. Obviously your hand is smaller in physical size when clenched and your portion size will reduce with it. Stay regular. Make sure that you eat well and eat often. Keep your meals consistent and don’t cheat. The Body for Life program is designed for your long term goals, as well as substantial physical and mental changes after only 12 weeks. Your attitude is half of your victory (or defeat) and will be the deciding factor as to whether you achieve your goals or not. Exercise according to plan. It doesn’t matter if you’re feeling tired, sluggish, or just too darn lazy to commit to your workout- do it anyway! You need to properly estimate the levels of physical exertion that you are required to achieve in order to manifest your results. Cheating yourself out of a proper workout is a great way to sabotage your success. Lastly, stay in the game. Don’t get demoralized if you haven’t lost more than a few pounds a couple of weeks into it. Remember that you are making extensive changes to your body’s routine as well as its metabolism. It will need some time to adjust itself accordingly.Quitting your workout or diet too soon will cause any results that you may have had to simple fade as your body sinks back into its former routine. This program can be challenging, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not worth it! Thousands of people have re-defined their lives (and their abs) following this program and there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to do the same. Remember that it’s only three months, and three months is a very small chunk of your life. If you’d like to add a weight loss supplement to your diet, you can learn more about Phentramin at PhenForum. Scrapbook Layout Sketches

Fevereiro 26th, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Michelle Fulton Not in the mood (or don’t have time) to scrapbook - try working on some scrapbook layout sketches for the events that you still need to put in your scrapbook. Why?… We’ve found that scrapbook layout sketches help to do two things: 1. It helps you make more efficient use of your time when you actually get around to scrapbooking. If you already know how you want to layout your pictures ahead of time, think of how many pages you could actually get done. 2. It also helps you make more efficient use of your supplies. When you use a scrapbook layout sketch as the basis for your page, you reduce the risk of needing to waste your “good” scrapbook paper to visualize an idea. Now, it’s best to keep all of your scrapbook layout sketches in one location - no sticky notes allowed! This can be as simple as a spiral notebook or a true sketch pad, but it’s critical that you have something in which to record your ideas for future scrapbook layouts. We often feel like ours is attached to our hips as we are always getting inspired by something new. TIP: You can also use your sketch book to record color ideas. Do you love the colors in one of your son’s shirts? Did you see an unusual, but great, color combination on a lamp shade? Why not keep a record of the colors for a potential future layout? It’s not difficult to do… Just cut out a few swatches of cardstock for the colors, glue them to a page in your sketch book and make notes, as appropriate (e.g., what theme it could apply to). It seems simple, but you’ll be surprised at what you don’t remember a few months down the road. When looking for inspiration for scrapbook layouts, it helps to think outside the box. You will be surprised where you can find ideas for creative scrapbook layouts. Of course, there are countless books out there that will give you layout ideas, but if you’re looking for something a little cheaper, try the weekly sale papers and magazines - our personal favorites. Take some time one day and leaf through some magazines. Don’t look specifically at the items on the pages look at how the items are laid out on each page and ask yourself the following: Where are the pictures placed?
Where is the textthe title?
What shapes do they use? Sometimes, you can even get ideas for embellishments. When sketching your layouts, don’t forget to leave some room for the title. The title doesn’t need to take up a large portion of the layout, but it does deserve some consideration. There is no set of rules on titles, other than they should relate to your pictures. There is even some wiggle-room in that regard, as your title doesn’t have to describe the event (e.g., Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday). You could describe the sentiments being expressed in the pictures (e.g., Joy, Courage, etc.). You could also use song titles, such as “You are the Sunshine of My Life” for a child’s layout or “Viva, Las Vegas!” to preserve a recent trip to “The Strip.” While you will usually see a title on the left-hand page of a two-page spread, you can place your title just about anywhere Horizontally across the page (top, middle or bottom)
Vertically down the left- or right-hand side of the page
Lower right-hand corner of the page
Overlap on the focal picture
Incorporate into an embellishment (e.g., tag) If your title is a little long, you may want to consider breaking it up into a title and a sub-title. Also, if it’s not already in your journaling, make sure to include a time element in your title. If the scrapbook layout is about a specific, non-recurring event, include the complete date (month-day-year). If it is a recurring event, such as Thanksgiving, you can just include the year. Why is this important?… Not only is your scrapbook a great way for you to display your pictures, it will become an heirloom with valuable genealogical information. The bottom line with titles, as it is with scrapbooking, is to be creative. Use stickers, stamps, computer fonts or your own handwriting whatever makes it your own! Once you have drawn your sketches, fine-tune your measurements using our money saving tip below. Money Saving Tip Don’t want to spend $60, $80$100 for a layout template system? Want to make sure that your scrapbook layout sketch makes sense and looks balanced before you cut into your good cardstock and patterned paper? Use cardstock scraps to make your own templates! Not only does it save you money, but it makes scrapbook layout design so much easier. So…don’t throw away that unused cardstock! You can move the scrapbook layout elements around to see how they will mesh and to help you see whether or not you’ll need to crop (or enlarge) any of your photos. A good base to start with 2 12″ x 12″ cardstock sheets
2 2″ x 12″ cardstock strips
2 4″ x 12″ cardstock strips
1 5″ x 7″ mat (actual size 5.25″ x 7.25″)
1 5″ x 7″ block (use for picture)
2 4″ x 6″ mats (actual size 4.25″ x 6.25″)
2 4″ x 6″ blocks (use for pictures)
3 3.5″ x 3.5″ blocks (use for pictures) As you create more scrapbook layout sketches, make additional templates as necessary (e.g., tags or different size pictures). Happy Scrapping! It May SEEM Like Every Man In The World Can Approach Women, But Most CAN’T

Fevereiro 26th, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Scot McKay OK Ladies, I know how it can be. Everywhere you go some guy invariably tries to hit on you. Maybe he even goes for the advanced routine of putting the moves on you. This could be happening to you every day. Possibly several times every day. And Im fully on board with the fact that such situations are far from limited to ready-made scenarios like bars, speed dating venues, etc. I realize you cant even buy a flippin airline ticket without dealing with someone cleverly lining up behind you in Boarding Group A with designs on getting to sit next to you for a cozy two hour trip from San Antonio to Chicago Midway. Happens every time, does it not? Theres no wonder that many women go through life believing that all men approach whatever woman they want, whenever they want as second nature. Similarly, my impression is that most women believe that if a man is interested in her, hell go through the motions of approaching her like all the rest of the guys seem to. Therefore, if a man isnt bothering to come up to her and make conversation, he simply must not be all that interested in doing so. Not true. Not by a long shot. My estimation, based on personal research and studying the work of others, is that at least 90% of all men have some trouble approaching and talking to a woman that they do not know. For many, trouble could be better described as paralyzing fear. For others guys, its simply a matter of mental programming that discourages them from bothering to try. Let me offer three potential reasons why this is the case: 1) Men have been taught that women do not want to be approached Whenever you see a fictional portrayal of a man approaching a woman in movies or on TV, there is a predictable resultespecially in comedic situations. The guy always tries some cheesy line and is invariably shot down HARD by the woman. Hilarity ensues. This is, for lack of a better description, a sure thing when its time to get a laugh. Never mind that the James Bonds of the world successfully meet women left and right in more dramatic roles. Guys see those guys as unrealistic characters, and the negative image of women comedically shooting them down is what sticks to the subconscious mind. Heck, theres even a commercial about a guy with bad breath hitting on a woman hes sitting next to on the plane, isnt there? 2) The perceived risks are too high What if shes married? Im sure she already has a boyfriend. Theres not really enough time to have a conversation. Its too loud in here anyway. By rationalizing away the opportunity with contrary thoughts, many men talk themselves out of taking any action to meet a woman, thereby nixing the chance of meeting her completelyand forever. 3) They cant handle the thought of getting beat by a girl Men have egos. Theres really no denying it. And one idea that the vast majority of guys cannot even stand the thought of is getting beaten by a girl in a competitive environment. Consider this. When a man approaches a woman, the common belief is that theres really no hiding the fact that hes doing so because he is romantically interested. As such, in his own mind he becomes very vulnerable at the point he begins a conversation with a woman he doesnt know. She holds all the cards, and has all the power when this happens. If she rejects his advance, she apparently positions herself as having power and authority over the man. After all, he wanted her, and she chose not to want him in return. Her social status is therefore perceived to be better than his. He LOST. Some ladies reading these words are hearing ideas that they have never, ever considered. After all, being afraid of girls is elementary school stuff, isnt it? Well, old habits sometimes die hard. Some guys grow old but never grow up, and Im sorry to report that this is one area that applies. Some guys reading this are likely coming to grips with concepts that have haunted them for years, without really having been able to pinpoint exactly why. So what to do? How can men have an easier time approaching women? And ladies, what can you do to make the experience of men approaching you more enjoyable? Find out answers to those questions and many more in next week’s article entitled “Here’s To Success For Men Who Approach Women…And For The Women They Approach”. What You Need to Know Before Placing an Ad in Your Local Newspaper (or ANY Other Publication)

Fevereiro 24th, 2008 by claudellegidaro

By Connie Scholl Have you been considering placing an advertisement in your local newspaper in hopes of drumming up some new business? Wait! Before you whip out your wallet, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the following four “rules of the road” to help you improve your chances of getting the response you’re seeking. Rule #1: You’ve Got to Choose the RIGHT Publication. For example, if you’re targeting affluent clients and offering a high-end service (such as in-home personal training, massage, dog walking, etc), don’t make the mistake of wasting your advertising dollars by placing an ad in the bargain news. Do your homework and find out what your target market is actually READING (you never know, maybe they ARE reading the bargain news!), and then apply your marketing dollars where there is the greatest opportunity. The success of any advertising or direct mail campaign can very often be attributed to the following: 50% of your “success” at advertising will depend on targeting the right publication; 25% of your “success” at advertising will depend on the copy in the ad; and 25% of your “success” at advertising will depend on the actual offer. Rule #2: Get Yourself a Traffic-Stopping HEADLINE! Your headline must quickly tap into the reader’s problem, need or desire, and instantly prompt them to read further. Take your time with the headline. It needs to quickly create interest and intrigue in your reader. In fact, when I’m writing ads for clients, I’ll spend 75% of my time on the headline alone! (If they don’t read the headline, the rest of the ad is useless!) Rule #3: Don’t Ever Forget, the Ad is NOT about YOU. How many times have you seen the “all about me” ads from other professionals in your industry? You know the ones I’m referring to — the business owner’s name takes up 50% of the ad, while the other half is filled with a laundry list of credentials and other self-centered copy. (This is the biggest mistake I see professionals make.) I’m not saying this information
shouldn’t be included, it just shouldn’t take up the “prime marketing real estate” section in your advertisement. Remember, your objective is to tap into your prospects’ problem or need, and get an immediate response — right then and there — before recycling day comes around and your expensive ad takes a one-way trip to the dump. How do you do this? By offering them what they want. (For example, a f.ree trial session or consultation, a report or article containing tips on how to solve their particular challenge, a no-appointment-necessary policy, etc.) Essentially, use this advertisement as a way to generate hot leads for your services. Plan on running your ad at least 7-10 times before getting a regular stream of calls from it. Rule #4: Understand the Power of Your Words. Pay close attention to the WORDS you select for your ad. (Here’s where knowing your target market inside and out really comes in handy!) While ad writing is a skill that takes time to master, you can jump-start the learning process by closely studying other ads that move YOU to take action, or you can simply hire someone to write a compelling ad for you. Here’s a simple formula I use to keep me on track when I’m writing for my clients: YOUR AD SHOULD DO THE FOLLOWING: Get their ATTENTION Quickly Maintain INTEREST Create a Burning DESIRE for What You’re OFFERING Finally, the ad should move your reader to TAKE A SPECIFIC ACTION!
